Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

How does Hypnotherapy work for Anxiety?

Hypnotherapy isn’t usually the first therapy that springs to people’s minds for any type of mental health condition. It never would have been if I was looking for therapy for anxiety prior to becoming a hypnotherapist myself. However, I have seen so many good, long-lasting results with my clients when using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, that I believe that you should definitely be considering it if you’re looking for therapy for anxiety.

Hypnotherapy can help to reduce physical anxiety symptoms such as panic attacks, sweating, racing heartbeat, muscle tension and difficulty breathing, as well as the mindset related issues like overthinking, constant worrying, catastrophising, negativity and fear. If you’re living with anxiety you’ll know only too well how exhausting it can be and how it can feel like a tireless cycle. Here is the lowdown of why your brain does this:

Imagine you’re walking down the road, and all of a sudden you’re faced with a large ferocious looking tiger – what would happen? You’d likely start to panic, your heart would race, you’d go sweaty and you’d feel a rush of adrenaline. All of the things that would help you to run away from a situation that was volatile. This response is part of the survival mechanism that we have to keep us safe – known by some as a primitive brain response. The thing is, it’s not very often that we are faced with a tiger when walking down the road – it’s much more likely in modern life that we become overwhelmed by life events; unexpected bills, work stress, arguments, responsibilities and such like. The primitive brain interprets these events as potential dangers or threat, and thrusts you back into survival mode, sometimes without you even realising it initially. This can continue to build until you find yourself feeling anxious, depressed, irritable and that can then become all consuming. Does this sound familiar?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works on the premise that we can engage another part of the brain, known as the intellectual mind, which will help you to move forwards and find solutions for your problems. It is a talking therapy, like you may associate with more traditional methods, but has the added extras of using techniques like hypnosis to engage the subconscious mind in moving forwards and also neuroscience teaching which means that you learn modern day science behind how the brain works (so that you can also deal with future problems!)

One of my favourite elements of hypnotherapy for anxiety is that we work upon the principles of neuroplasticity – in simplistic terms, changing thoughts and taking action to essentially rewire the brain. This helps you to achieve so much, not only by reducing your anxiety symptoms, fear and depressive thoughts, but also enabling you to boost your confidence and self esteem.

What does a hypnotherapy session entail you may be asking yourself? Hypnotherapy sessions are approximately an hour long and contain 4 key elements – the first part is positive psychology and discussion, followed by “brain teaching;” where we take elements that are a problem for you and discover how it works in the mind. Psychotherapy then follows, and we finish using hypnois. Hypnosis is a form of deep relaxation, there is no mind control so nothing to be concerned about. Hypnotherapy sessions with me tend to be enjoyable, and lots of clients leave positive reviews, like the one below:

“Honestly life changing! I was new to this and wasn’t sure how I would find it but Amy makes you feel so comfortable right from the get go, it’s like talking to a friend. Each session has just been amazing, the perfect mixture of making sure you are feeling comfortable but also finding ways to slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone. I have learnt a lot of techniques that I know will continue to help me for a long time. Amy explains everything so perfectly and is very knowledgeable in this area. These sessions have really changed how I view things and I would recommend Amy to anyone with out a doubt. I will forever be thankful for Amy helping me change my view on life, helping me become the person I didn’t think I could ever be, and for that I’m so so grateful.”
